Perhaps you remember the books, movies or TV shows which had a great impact on you as a child. As an avid reader who could never enjoy enough stories (which cost my mother a pretty penny), I had a wonderful assortment of books. One of those which deeply touched me was the story of Heidi. You may remember Heidi as the young Swiss girl who was unhappily living with a strict and harsh aunt. She later went on to find joy and contentment with her reclusive Grandfather living in the Alps with his herd of goats.
To be quite exact, it was more than 130 years ago that the Swiss author, Johanna Spyri, wrote about Heidi's childhood and life. It was a story of humble beginnings, but grew to unparalleled popularity over time. Heidi Part I for iPad brings you the first of three sequels. In this segment, you will meet Heidi, an orphaned Swiss girl who is now living happily with her grandfather in a small hut in the mountains until one day unpleasant Aunt Dete takes her to Frankfurt to be a companion to a sickly young girl, Klara. The story of Swiss Heidi is filled with emotion, love, kindness, courage and goodness that is a lesson in character to all ages. Some of the endearing features of Heidi Part I for iPad are as follows:
- Professional narration in English or German
- Choose between 'Read to me' or 'I want to read myself
- Touch the people to make them speak (in the German app version, have them speak in Swiss Dialect or German)
- Touch animals and objects to hear them make sounds
The depiction of Swiss scenery is lovely, and the graphics are colorful and eye catching for little kids. Children will be mesmerized by the interaction between the members of this cast of characters. Most prominently throughout the story is the familiar sound of the tinkling bells around the neck of the goats. (The bells served to jingle loudly in case a goat was lost or hurt in a mountain crevice). Tap the animals and bits of scenery in order to hear specific identifying sounds, or the characters when you wish them to speak. This is a great story teaching morals and educating children in the culture of the Swiss. It is a classic story that I highly recommend. Fortunately, it all doesn't end here, and you will soon be able to continue with the next exciting sequel where you will discover all that is happening with Heidi in Frankfurt while she resides with Klara.
